What is IRMS and how is its seniority list prepared
The Indian Railway Medical Service (IRMS) is a cadre of doctors who serve the Indian Railways, one of the largest employers in the world. The IRMS doctors are responsible for providing health care to the railway employees, their families and passengers, as well as managing the railway hospitals and health units across the country.
The IRMS was established in 1929 as a separate organized service under the Ministry of Railways. The recruitment to IRMS is done through the Combined Medical Services Examination (CMSE) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) every year. The candidates who qualify the CMSE are allocated to IRMS or other central health services based on their rank and preference.
The seniority list of IRMS officers is prepared by the Railway Board based on their date of appointment, date of birth and category. The seniority list determines the promotion, transfer and posting of the IRMS officers. The seniority list is updated periodically and published on the official website of the Ministry of Railways.
The latest seniority list of IRMS officers was published on February 23, 2023. It contains the names, categories, dates of birth, dates of appointment, dates of regularisation and railway zones of 283 IRMS officers. The seniority list can be accessed from here.
What are the challenges and achievements of IRMS
The IRMS faces many challenges in fulfilling its duties and responsibilities. Some of the challenges are:
Lack of adequate infrastructure, equipment and manpower in railway hospitals and health units.
High workload and stress due to large number of patients and long working hours.
Difficulties in accessing remote and rural areas where railway tracks and stations are located.
Emergencies and disasters involving railway accidents, natural calamities and pandemics.
Constant need for updating skills and knowledge in the rapidly evolving field of medicine.
Despite these challenges, the IRMS has achieved many milestones and accolades in its history. Some of the achievements are:
Establishment of specialized centres of excellence in cardiology, neurology, oncology, nephrology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and dentistry in various railway hospitals.
Introduction of telemedicine services to provide consultation and diagnosis to patients in remote areas through video conferencing.
Implementation of health insurance schemes and wellness programmes for railway employees and their families.
Organization of health camps, blood donation camps, vaccination drives and awareness campaigns on various health issues.
Publication of research papers, books and journals on various aspects of railway medicine.
Participation in national and international conferences, seminars and workshops on railway health care.
Collaboration with other central health services, state health departments, NGOs and private hospitals for better coordination and resource sharing.
The IRMS is committed to provide quality health care to the railway fraternity and the public at large. It strives to overcome the challenges and enhance its achievements with dedication and professionalism. 061ffe29dd
